Holistic care is the process of healing a whole person instead of “treating” parts, or symptoms, of a health problem & aims to prevent illness in the first place as well. Ultimately the goal of holistic care is for individuals to have optimal health through various methods of treatment.
The concept of natural & holistic medicine is ancient, originating in China and India. There is a problem with conventional medicine.. not only do doctors almost always turn to chemicals first, but prescribed chemical medicines and treatments generally are simply meant to suppress a symptom (conventional medicines also tack on a huge list of possible side effects) rather than fix the problem at its core. Most health problems that humans face are preventable to begin with by making mindful health choices, and even if it is too late to prevent the health problem, most can be treated or at the very least aided naturally from the inside out. However, holistic health considers all options and doesn’t altogether cast aside conventional medicine (alternative medicine does not include conventional medication choices but holistic medicine and alternative medicine are not the same thing).

Conventional medicine in itself is not bad, and advanced mainstream medicine is necessary for many things such as surgery and the diagnosis & treatment of life-threatening illnesses, but it is not the only option for a huge amount of things that people deal with and take pills for every single day. The problem is when a holistic, integrative approach to the patient’s overall well-being is not taken into consideration and other methods of treatment are not even thought about. A lot of answers are found in ancient practices and natural methods. For example; people reach for pill bottles even for things such as minor headaches or a cold, which peppermint by itself could be used to treat both instead.
